Community Alternatives is always in need of stable, caring foster families for children and youth who are unable to live with their own families. By opening your home to a child who is at risk for serious abuse and neglect, you can:

·         Provide a loving, stable environment for a child in need;

·         Help a child develop healthy, caring relationships with others;

·         Encourage a child to overcome their limitations and feel good about themselves;

·         Receive tax-free financial assistance

What are the qualifications for becoming a foster parent?

All foster parents must be at least 21 years of age, in good physical and mental health, and be of high moral character.

 In addition, prospective parents should:

· Successfully complete  the Community Alternatives training and approval process;

· Provide a clean, comfortable home environment with a separate bed for each child;

· Be flexible, tolerant, and enjoy a challenge.

Who are the children I will be helping?

We serve children ranging in age from birth to 18. They come from different cultural backgrounds and have often experienced loss, instability, substance abuse, neglect, physical abuse in their family. Many, through no fault of their own, find themselves in out of home care either temporarily or permanently. Some may be working towards reunification while others are awaiting an adoptive home.

All you need is love

To be a foster parent you don’t need to earn a high income, own your own home, be married, or have previous parenting experience. What you do need is a big heart and the ability to provide a safe, nurturing environment. After completing foster care training you’ll be able to guide and support your child every step of the way.

Are you an experienced specialized foster parent or do you have an interest in serving children with complex behavioral or mental health needs?

If so than the Community Alternatives Host Home Program is the place for you. As a Surrogate Parent you will have intensive therapeutic and case management support in providing care for a child with challenging behavior. You will play a major role in preparing a child to either return home or to move on to a permanent “forever” home. Training is provided to help you grow as a Surrogate parent. As a member of the child’s treatment team you will be able to contribute your experience, knowledge and be an advocate for the child’s best interests.
